1.What is AOG?
AOG an acronyme for ACTS OF GRATITUDE.
2.What kind of organization is AOG?
Acts Of Gratitude (AOG) a National Non Govermental Organization (NGO)/Nonprofit registered and operating in Rwanda.
3.What is the mission of AOG?
AOG aims to foster the culture of giving back in order to save more vulnerable people and build a community of socially responsible people of all categories for Rwanda.
4.Who are the AOG community members? Or who can join AOG?
AOG community members are grateful people who have been helped (by family, friends, nonprofit organizations, ...) and feel that they owe the community a debt of gratitude and active involvement. At AOG we believe that ‘everyone can help’. Thus, people of all catergories (adult and young, who went to school or not, females and males, rich and poor, white and black,...) can join AOG. AOGers are socially responsible people.
5.When was AOG founded?
May 8, 2011.
6.What are AOG programs?
As of now, AOG has 4 programs:
7.How can one join AOG?
If one is interested in joining AOG, he/she sign a commitment form that depends on how they want to serve. One can be a fellow, or a donor, or a volunteer, or an advisor. You can find a commitment form template on our website (http://actsofgratitude.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=68&Itemid=120) or get it from a person who got you interested in AOG.
8.Would you explain to me the difference and attributions of the above described membership options?
In brief, AOG gives a range of options to people interested in giving back to the community.
9.If one decides to join AOG now as a fellow, what is directly expected of such a new fellow?
10.Is AOG interested in building partnerships?
Yes. AOG partner with different organizations (partner organizations) and corporate companies (corporate partners).
11.How did the idea to start AOG come?
AOG was founded on May 8, 2011 by 13 people. Among the 13, Jean d’Amour MUTONI is the one who came up with the idea after being asked this question: ‘can’t you rely on yourselves?’.
That question was put to him when he was heading a a group of homeless students of the former Kigali Health institute (KHI) and Kigali Institude of Science and Technology (KIST).
In 2009, Jean d’Amour went to different donors to seek alms for hygiene materials and foodstuff. Most of the donors turned him down. And one of them put the above mentioned question to him and advised that the group would talk to almni members who were earning some income and ask them to contribute to possible solutions. Unfortunately, most of the alumni refused to help.
Later, by chance, the group leadership talked to KHI employees and members of the KHI RPF (Rwanda Patriotic Front) task force. The later accepted to help for 2009 holidays.
From that situation, Jean d’Amour was challenged to think why people who were helped find it difficult to give back. Over some time, he shared that challenge with people in his network. Most of the people he talked to said they really wanted to do something but the problem was getting a reliable channel through with to serve.
On May 8, 2014, Jean d’Amour invited 12 people who had showed to a meeting to brainstorm on what can be done to help people give back to the community.
During that meeting, an organization named ‘Saved to Save Initiative’ was founded. In December 2011, the organization’s name changed to ‘Acts Of Gratitude’.
You can read more on the AOG founding history by visiting: http://actsofgratitude.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=38&Itemid=103.
12.What is the uniqueness of AOG?
The uniqueness of AOG is found in its slogan/motto: ‘everyone can help’.
Before AOG, no other organization had proved it possible that people of all categories can help. You would find that most of the organizations divide people into 2 constant parts: donors/benefactors and receivors/beneficiaries.
We, AOGers, see things differently and believe that everyone can help: rich and poor, white and black, literate or illiterate, females and males, young and old, ... That’s why AOG is made up of and built on the principal of true prtnership between all categories of people. Furthermore, we are convinced that if a big number of people who have been helped in Rwanda would decide to give back (by just doing what they can), most of the problems our community face would be eradicated.
Or otherwise, people will remain in aid dependency and problems will remain forever.
13.As of now, which achievements do you celebrate in AOG?
14.It is apparent that AOG works in many domains. Why didn’t you choose to focus on one thing?
AOG is joined by a wide range of people. Thus, we try to offer a good number of options for each and everyone to get where to fit. However, we have a priority when it comes to spending the organization’s money: EDUCATION. More than 50% of all the fellow contributions and most of donations are invested in offering high school scholarships.
